A whale shark which washed up on the shores of Mullaitivu was helped back into the seas last evening by local fishermen.
Fishermen in the area said that the fish had weighed around a tonne.
This is the second instance in which a whale shark washed up on Sri Lankan shores before being helped back into the sea this year.
In June, two fishermen had been arrested after a whale shark had died after being trapped in their fishing nets in the seas off Pooneryn.
