Woman killed in vehicle mishap during driving test

News

A woman was killed and another seriously injured after a vehicle being driven by a candidate taking a driving test ran over them in the Matara Fort area.

The unfortunate incident occurred yesterday (15). The victim has been identified as a 60-year-old mother of two. She and her friend were on their way to visit a relative of hers who had taken ill when the vehicle ran over them.

At the time of the incident, the instructor had just alighted from the vehicle and only the student driver was inside.

He had reversed the vehicle in the presense of the examiner and was moving it forward when the two women walked in front of the vehicle. At this point, those nearby had shouted a warning at him to stop, but instead of pressing the break, the panicked driver had accidently pressed the accelerator, sending the vehicle speeding towards the two women and knocking them down, a senior police officer from the Matara Police revealed.

The two victims were admitted to the Matara Hospital with serious injuries but one later died.

Police have arrested the student driver and the van involved in the accident. They said the vehicle belonged to a driving school in Matara Town.

The driver is due to be produced before the Matara Magistrate's Court.
