The ceremonial opening of the 10Mw Colombo ‘Waste to Energy’ power plant took place at Muthurajawela today.
Solid waste within the Colombo Municipal area will be made use for the project which has been established by Aitken Spence Ltd in coordination with the Colombo Municipality and the Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB).
According to Vijitha Herath, the Chairman of the CEB around 700 tons of solid waste could be made use to generate 10 mw of power. The CEB will purchase the generated electricity.
Minister Dullas Alahapperuma addressing the ceremony to mark the opening said the project will also be a solution to the garbage issue in the city.
He said it was a revolution in the sustainable energy programme.
Colombo Mayor Rosey Senayake and Chairman of Aitken Spence also addressed the gathering.
Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa declared open the project.
