Orangutan at Dehiwala zoo passes away

The only orangutan held at the Dehiwala National Zoological gardens had passed away yesterday.

According to the Director of Animal Health and Nutrition at the zoo, Dr R.C. Rajapaksa, the 15 year old male orangutan identified as" Sakifo" had been suffering from a stomach ailment before its passing.

He added that the remains of the animal had been sent to Peradeniya University to conduct a post mortem inquiry to find the cause of death.

The doctor said that the orangutan was born in the zoo. Its parent animals had also passed away during earlier years.
