The road leading to the Somawathiya Chaithya has been flooded due to torrential rains. Police said a 2km stretch of road from Diggala onwards has become inundated.
The flooding has occurred due to the rising waters of the Mahaweli River, which has swelled owing torrential rains experienced in the area since yesterday (13).
Police Media Unit said buses carrying pilgrims who had come to worship at the Somawathiya Chaithya are being diverted via Welikanda. Police life guards too have been deployed to the area.
