8 Sri Lanka Sinha Regiment (SLSR) troops of the 611 Brigade under the 61 Division of the Security Force HQ - West (SFHQ-West) as of Friday (14) evening are engaged in a massive search and rescue operation in the general area of Thumbaliyadda in Anguruwella, Warakapola after a landslide buried a house with 4 persons alive.
As of dusk, preliminary reports confirmed that one person (father) of the family was rescued clearing earth mounds. More than 75 Army personnel including Officers are busy clearing the earth in search of other survivors, but torrential rains and flowing waters have posed a major challenge to the continuing operations.
The rescued father of the family has been rushed to the Warakapola Base Hospital.
Under the directions of the Commander of the Army, Lieutenant General Vikum Liyanage, Commander, Security Forces - West together with the General Officer Commanding, 61 Division, 611 Brigade Commander and respective Commanding Officers are proceeding with rescue and relief work.
