The World Press Photo (WPP) Exhibition 2024 is set to take place at the Arcade Independence Square in Colombo. The exhibition will open to the public from tomorrow (January 10), running daily from 10:30 a.m. to 7:00 p.m., until January 20.
Organized by the Embassy of the Netherlands in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Press Institute (SLPI), the exhibition promises to be a profound display of photojournalistic excellence.
After its initial display in Colombo, the exhibition will travel to Jaffna, where it will be showcased at the Cultural Center from January 24 to 27. It will then move to Galle, taking place at the Municipal Hall from January 31 to February 2, before making its return to Colombo at Cinnamon Life from February 8 to 10.
During a press briefing yesterday, a panel comprising WPP Exhibitions Manager and Curator Martha Gonzalez, SLPI Chairman Kumar Nadesan, Ambassador of the Netherlands to Sri Lanka Bonnie Horbach, and Cinnamon Life's Marketing Director Radiesha Daluwatte discussed the significance of the event.
“Today, we gather to celebrate the art of storytelling—a medium that transcends barriers of language and culture to connect us to the stories that matter most,” said Mr. Nadesan. “This exhibition is not just a display of photographs; it's a celebration of humanity, resilience, and the universal need for connections.”
Ambassador Horbach emphasized the crucial role of media and journalism in modern Sri Lanka, stating, “Awareness of the power and importance of free media is key to strong democracies like Sri Lanka. Looking through the lens of a photographer can help societies and individuals reflect on their own opinions and perceptions, as well as inspire social change.”
Curator Ms. Gonzalez shared insights into the selection process, noting that 61,000 entries came from 3,851 photographers across 130 countries, highlighting the challenging task of the jury to narrow it down to 31. "What's interesting about the experience is that you get a chance to visit within a single space, something like a tour around the world."
"Our biggest hope for this exhibition is that it can create a space for people to have dialogs, for them to discuss things that challenge their own perspectives, listen and exchange ideas," she said.
The exhibition will feature award-winning photographs on a variety of themes, including climate change, migration routes, healthcare, family, and war, among others.
