Fishermen Unions in North staged a protest today in front of the Indian Consulate Office in Jaffna against ongoing poaching activities by Indian fishermen and urged the government to implement the law banning bottom trawling in Lankan territorial sea. Fishermen alleged that their livelihood is under threat due to poaching by Indian fishermen.
Fishermen commenced their protest marching towards the office of Douglas Devananda, Minister of Fisheries and proceeded to Indian Consulate office where they handed over petition to Indian officials to curb Indian fishermen poaching in Lankan waters.
