Former Sri Lanka captain and the most senior player in the current team, Angelo Mathews is considering retirement from international cricket according to reliable sources.
Mathews, currently 34, has requested Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) not to consider him for future assignments and has made an informal hint to the cricket administrators that he wishes to retire from playing for the country henceforth.
One of the key issues for Mathews' decision, as it is understood, was the dispute about the new player contracts introduced by SLC.
In addition he was one of the senior players axed from the national team in the limited overs matches by the selectors to nurture and give opportunities to the youngsters with the 2023 World Cup on focus.
He was one of the key players who refused to sign the contract from the initiative, to which other players joined and delayed the process.
Mathews is expected to make an official announcement during the coming weeks and he has messaged his close associates about the decision as it is learnt.
He has played 90 Tests, 218 ODIs and 78 T20s for Sri Lanka with averages of 44.86, 41.67 and 25.51.
He also has a tally of 191 wickets across all three formats.
