Cricket: Dambulla franchise gets new owner

Sport

Two weeks after its owner was sacked, the Lanka Premier League (LPL) organisers have sealed a deal with a US-based Sri Lankan-owned company to acquire the Dambulla cricket team.

This decision came after the tournament organisers ousted the Bangladeshi owner due to his arrest in Colombo on match-fixing charges.

Sequoia Consultants, Inc., a renowned civil engineering consulting firm based in Los Angeles, California, has stepped forward to lead the future of the LPL team, Dambulla. The team will operate under De Silva Holdings, a dedicated entity established for this venture.

Priyanga de Silva, a Chartered Civil Engineer and the CEO and President of Sequoia Consultants, Inc., holds the majority stake in the company.

De Silva, a former first-class cricketer who represented Sri Lanka U19 in 1983 and currently plays for the United States Masters Over-60 cricket team, expressed his enthusiasm for this venture.

In addition to his cricketing background, de Silva is actively involved as the head coach of the Southern California Youth Cricket Association and owns various businesses in the USA and Sri Lanka.

“My passion for cricket, particularly in Sri Lanka, drove me to acquire the Dambulla Sixers team,” stated de Silva.

“Witnessing the growth of the LPL over the past four years, especially in a country of our size, has been remarkable. I'm thrilled to contribute to this growth and the development of cricket in our nation,” he added.

With the acquisition, the team will now be known as the ‘Dambulla Sixers’.

“We are delighted to welcome the new owner to the Dambulla team, and Mr. de Silva’s cricketing background undoubtedly enriches this ownership,” remarked Samantha Dodanwela, Tournament Director of the LPL.

“The new owner brings the much-needed stability to the Dambulla Sixers, and his presence will undoubtedly make a significant difference to the franchise,” stated Anil Mohan, CEO and Founder of IPG Sports.

The fifth edition of the Lanka Premier League is set to commence on July 1, with matches scheduled to be played in Kandy, Dambulla, and Colombo.
