Tharushi, men’s 4x400 relay team set new Asian Championships records

Hours after 19-year-old sprinter Tharushi Karunaratne dazzled the track with a new Asian Championships record in the women’s 800m dash, Sri Lanka’s men’s 4x400m quartet produced a stunning performance to win gold with a new meet record at the 25th Asian Athletics Championships which concluded in Thailand today (16).
Karunaratne clocked a time of 2:00:66secs to clinch the gold medal in the women’s 800m event while teammate Gayanthika Abeyrathna grabbed silver with a time of 2:03:25secs.
Last month, Karunarathna clinched the Gold medal in the women’s 800m event and the Silver medal in the women’s 400m competition at the 20th Asian Under-20 Junior Athletic Championships 2023 currently in Yecheon, South Korea.
She was also part of the women’s 4x400 team that won the silver medal. 
The team consisting of Karunarathna, Nadeesha Ratnayake—the new Asian 400m champion, Lakshima Mendis and Harshani Fernando clocked 3:33.27secs to finish second. This is a new Sri Lanka record. In addition, Karunaratne also was a member of the mixed 4x400 relay team that clinched silver on Friday.
In the men’s 4x400m race, the Sri Lanka team comprising Kalinga Kumarage, Aruna Darshana, Pabasara Niku and Rajitha Rajakaruna were in stunning form as they clocked a record time of 3:0.56secs to win the event.
Meanwhile, Sri Lanka finished fourth place on the medal table with three Gold medals, two Silver medals, and three Bronze medals.
