Tharushi Karunaratne established a new Asian Championships record on her way to win the gold medal in the women’s 800m at the 25th Asian Athletics Championships being held in Thailand.
She clocked 2:00.66secs erasing the previous record of 2:01.16 set by Zhang Jian (China) in 1998 at Fukuoka.
This is the first time since Susanthika Jayasinghe’s 200m record in 2002.
Meanwhile, Gayanthika Abeyratne clocked 2:03.25sec to win the bronze medal.
Also, another new Sri Lankan record was broken today.
Sri Lanka's women's 4*400 relay quartet won the silver medal by clocking 3:33.27secs.
