The colourful opening ceremony of the ninth Defence Services Sports Games commenced on March 24 at the Panagoda Sri Lanka Army indoor stadium with the chief guest being State Defence Minister Ruwan Wijewardena.
The games will conclude in August.
The games is being organised by the Sri Lanka Air Force and features 37 sports. Sri Lanka Army, Sri Lanka Navy and Sri Lanka sportsmen featuring over 5000 – men and women – are taking part at the games.
Several athletes who brought honour at the recently concluded 12th SAF Games in India are also taking part.
Depending on the performances of the sportsmen the Sri Lanka teams for the World Military Games, will be selected.
On every weekend the games will take place at all services stadiums.
