Athletics: Continued training for those who excel at 33rd Schools Championship

The Athletics Association of Sri Lanka will select the top performers at the recent All Island School Games Athletics Championships to put them on continuous training ahead of several international competitions next year. 

Accordingly athletes who reached required standards in the U-20 age group will be selected to the junior pool. 

Sri Lanka is expected to compete at the South Asian Junior Athletics Championships which will be held in Sri Lanka, the Asian Junior Athletics Championships in Japan and the Youth Olympic Games to be held in Argentina. 

The performances at the meet, though hampered by incessant rain was considered good with some impressive performances coming from the junior athletes. 

Meanwhile S.P. Aruna Dharshana (Boys) of Weerakeppitipola National School (NS), Akuramboda and B.M. Hasini Praboda (Girls) of Holy Family Convent Wennappuwa were adjudged Best Athletes at the All Island School Games Athletics Championships held at the Mahinda Rajapaksa Sports Complex, Diyagama. 

It was a five-day event with over 5,000 Athletes participating. Best Athlete- Boys, Dharshana ran the 400 metres in 47.19 sec in the Under (U)-20 age group. 

Best Athlete- Girls, Hasini Praboda cleared 13.22 metres in the Triple Jump, in the U-20 age group. 

There were five age groups, U-12, U-14, U-16, U-18 and U-20. 

The Junior Boys and Girls Championships were won by Sir John Kotalawela MV, Kurunegala, and Ave Maria Convent, Negombo, respectively. 

The Senior Boys and Girls Championships were won by Maris Stella College, Negombo, and A. Ratnayake MMV Walalla, respectively. 

The Provincial Champions were Western Province with 1,268 points, while Central Province with 526 points were 1st Runner-up and 3rd place went to North Western Province with 438 points.
