The PATH 2016 Sprint and Relay Championship which was postponed due to bad weather conditions in May, will be held with the participation of school athletes at Bandaranaike Vidyalaya ground, Payagala, over the weekend (24 and 25).
The two day event, organised by the Perambara Cultural Forum of Sanvedee Minis Pavura(SMP) in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Coaches Association (SLSACA), is aimed at promoting athletics among school children in the Beruwala area.
Organisers expect over 1000 athletes from nearly 30 schools in the area to compete in sprint and relay events.
Events will be conducted under four age categories namely Under-17, Under-15, Under-13 and Under-11 for both boys and girls.
Only merit certificates will be awarded to Under-13 and Under-11 age categories going by the Education Ministry regulations.
Athletes in the Under-17 and Under-15 age categories will vie for the Overall Boys’ and Girls’ titles.
The Senior Schools Championship, Junior Schools Championship, Relay Championship are the other titles awarded to schools aggregating the highest points.
The Best Athletes in the Under-17 and Under-15 age categories will also be awarded trophies.
It is the second consecutive occasion that the SMP, SLSACA and Nestle Lanka’s Milo brand are joining hands to conduct a similar event.
The first event, PATH 2015, was mainly aimed at identifying talent and selecting the cream of athletes of the area for training workshops was a huge success.
The PATH (Perambara Athletic Talent Hunt) was introduced by the SMP, an organization dedicated for social development in the area. It has received the blessings of the Divisional and Zonal Education offices.
SMP’s cultural arm, the Perambara Cultural Forum which is tasked with organising the event is just one of SMP’s nine organisational structures.
