As seniors emerged from outstation schools, juniors have started to come to the fore from Colombo schools.
This shows that there is a great awareness in athletics in the schools scene.
The best example is that a fortnight ago at the Bogambara Stadium All-Island School Games A. Ratnayake MMV, Walala annexed the overall girls championship title while Maris Stella College Negombo went on to win the boys championships.
A week later at the at the Sir John Tarbet Junior Athletics Championships in Embilipitiya, Mahaweli Stadium, Ladies College won the overall girls championship while St. Benedict’s College Kotahena took the boys championship.
It is now clear that senior athletes are coming forward from the outstations while junior athletes are making their mark in Colombo.
Balapitiya Siddhartha MMV and Sir John Kotalawela MMV, Kurunegala were Under-14 boys champions and in the girls relay championships respectively from outstation schools.
The Sri Lanka Schools Athletics Association conducted the Sir John Tarbat Junior Athletics Championships where over 3500 school athletes participated.
Shaemal Milinda Perera of St. Mary’s College, Chilaw and Sadeepa Henderson of Gateway College, Rajagiriya emerged as the best boys and girls athletes respectively.
