Basketball: St. Bridget’s outsmarts Sirimavo Bandaranike to win U-15 title

St. Bridget’s Convent beat Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya 43-35 in an absorbing game, to clinch the All-Island Schools Under-15 Division ‘B’ Basketball Championship, played at the St. Bridget’s Courts. 

Michelle Kategoda top scored with 16 points, contributing well towards the win of the Bridgetians, while Thevni Ranasinghe (10) and Ashlene Kodippily (9) played supporting roles. 

Overall, St. Bridget’s played as a unit, focusing highly on a win where the spotlight was on Liara Hetiarachchi, who was the top scorer of the encounter. 

However Liara and her team, Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, had to end up in the losing side. Dinithi Alwis contributed with 6 points. 

Michelle Kategoda of St. Bridget’s was named the Most Valuable Player of the final while Liara Hettiarachchi of Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya, won the award for the Best Offensive Player. 

St. Bridget’s Convent’s Shyami Perera was named the Best Defensive Player.   

The victorious St. Bridget’s Convent team comprised of Michelle Kategoda, Thevni Ranasinghe, Ashlene Kodippily, Shyami Perera, Nethanya Perera, Ivone Kumarasinghe, Thiasha Fernando, Hashini Perera, Sneha Dissanayake, Lizendra Candappa, Vaneza Candappa and Dinuri Fernando. 

Led by Kavya Rajawasan, the Sirimavo Bandaranaike Vidyalaya team was represented by Oshani Wickramasinghe, Liyaara Hettiarachchi, Mihiri Alwis, Dinithi Alwis, Thiranya Athukorala, Ishara Dissanayake, Wathmi Heenatigala, Vinuli Thivithma, Pasadi Wijegunawardana, Vinuki Samarakoon, Chathumini Kothalawalage, Sauyri Pathirage, Bhagya Fernando and Sandali Jayawardena.
