A highly confident contingent of four men and four women carrom players accompanied by two officials will be leaving for the United Kingdom today to participate in the 7th World Carrom Championship scheduled to be held from Monday (7) to Friday (11) in Birmingham, the United Kingdom.
This world event held once in four years was hosted in 2012 by Sri Lanka ending up in second place behind India.
Nishantha Fernando kept the national flag flying high when he defeated Baratha Dasan of India to be crowned as the World Champion.
Sri Lanka Men's team will be led by 12 time national champion and Swiss League World Champion Chamil Cooray who entered the record books by winning the title for eight consecutive years and having experience in international exposure from 2003.
Nishantha Fernando, M. Sheriffdeen, M. Shaheed and Cooray were members of the Sri Lankan team that won the 2008 World Championship in France.
National champion Joseph Rositha is at the helm of the Women's team which comprises Chalani Lakmali, Yashika Rahabadda and Arosha Wickremasinghe.
Susantha Fernando, one of the Managers stated that the team is in the pink of touch and confidence in winning both their team events, Doubles event, single events and the Swiss League event.

Chamil Cooray (Captain): Currently occupying No.6 spot in world rankings.
Nishantha Fernando: Reigning world champion. Ranked No.2 in national rankings. Two time
national champion, representing Sri Lanka team for 16 years.
M. Shaheed: Made international debut in 2013. Nationally ranked No.4.
M. Sheriffdeen: First represented Sri Lanka in 2007 and No 3 national ranked player.
Udesh Perera: (Standby). Ranked No.6
Women's Team:
Joseph Roshita (Captain): Has won the national championship for 5 years. Representing Sri Lanka since 2009.
Chalani Lakmali: No. 2 in national ranking. Made her international debut in 2010.
Yasikha Rahubadda: Currently ranked No.3 Representing the national team for over a decade.
Arosha Wickremasinghe: University student. First represented Sri Lanka in 2011. Currently ranked No.4 nationally.
Maduka Dilshani: (Standby)National ranked No.6
