Cricket: National caps find form in SL 'A' win over England Lions in first ODI

National caps Kusal Perera, Danuhska Gunathilaka, Thisara Perera and Milinda Siriwardana found form as Sri Lanka 'A' beat England Lions by 47 runs on Duckworth/Lewis Method in the first unofficial ODI match played at Dambulla on Thursday (2).

Put in to bat first Sri Lanka 'A' posted 278 for 7 wickets in 48.1 overs and England Lions were given the target of chasing 278 runs in 43 overs under D/L method. 

The visitors could only manage 230 runs for the loss of 9 wickets in 43 overs as Sri Lanka 'A' took the lead of the five-match series 1-0. 

Openers Kusal Perera and Danushka Gunathilaka put on 123 runs in 25 overs to pave way for a Sri Lanka win.

Perera, playing a contrasting style faced 74 deliveries to make 59 inclusive of eight fours and a six while Gunathilaka, more settled hit 64 off 79 balls with five fours and a six. 

At a point England Lions bounced back to put pressure on Sri Lanka 'A' as the home team was made to struggle at 191-6 in the 38th over.

But a timely partnership of 65 runs between skipper Milinda Siriwardana and allrounder Thisara Perera for the seventh wicket helped Sri Lanka 'A' post a commanding total. 

Siriwardana made 48 off 41 balls inclusive of five fours and two sixes while Perera remained unbeaten on 56 off 35 balls inclusive of five sixes and two fours.

Toby Roland-Jones, Craig Overton and Tom Helm picked two wickets each. 

Opener Keaton Jennings took the initiative by top scoring with 64 off 70 deliveries inclusive of eight fours and a six, but the top and middle order totally collapsed despite two important partnerships. 

Coming in from the middle order Liam Livingstone made 39 off 45 balls with two fours and a six and tailender Craig Overton remained unbeaten on 60 off 45 balls inclusive of three fours and two sixes, but England Lions fell short of 48 runs of the target. 

Lahiru Madushanka took three wickets while Shehan Jayasuriya and Amila Aponso picked two wickets each.

The second unofficial ODI will be played on Saturday (4) at Dambulla.
