Sport

The 2nd Inter-Club Golf Championship organised and conducted by the Sri Lanka Golf Union (SLGU) will be held at the Victoria Golf and Country Resort (VGCR) in Digana, Kandy on Saturday (18) and Sunday (19).

The two oldest Golf Clubs in Sri Lanka the Royal Colombo Golf Club and the Nuwara Eliya Golf Club, together with teams from the Sri Lanka Air Force, Sri Lanka Army and Sri Lanka Navy will challenge VGCR for the 2017 champion status.

This year the format will be on Stableford points on the net scores with each member club entitled to enter a maximum of five teams comprising five golfers per team.

Each member club can select their respective teams and vie for honours.

In addition to the Inter-Club Championship there will be an Overall Team Trophy for the best team of five, from the entire field of participants including private teams of golfers who are not playing for a particular club.

The championship will tee-off on Saturday (18), followed by a traditional 19th Hole ‘post mortem’ all night, could have been, should have been scenario.

On Day 2, Sunday (19) the traditional SLGU events which have been played for over 50 years, with teams of three randomly drawn facilitating all golfers to participate with no restriction on handicap, will take place.

Ladies and Seniors will also be eligible and selected to play for their respective clubs of their choice and the camaraderie between the member clubs to win the championship shield is building up.

The championship was inaugurated in 2016 and VGCR emerged the inaugural winners.

In addition the SLGU, the governing body of golf in Sri Lanka, under the Presidency of Priath Fernando, together with its Council Members, has embarked on a mission and vision to make Sri Lanka Golf world class.

A dynamic Sri Lanka Golf task force as it were is in place working on the regeneration of Sri Lanka Golf – Vision 2020 and beyond.

With the advent of golf courses and facilities in several parts of Sri Lanka under the auspices and management of the defense service forces, the opportunity to introduce the game of golf to students, juniors and the public in general has become possible now.

Within the past few years after the civil war ceased in Sri Lanka, the Sri Lanka Air Force have established fantastic golfing facilities in Trincomalee, Eagles Golf Links, Heritage Golf Club in Anuradhapura and another 9-hole golf course in Koggala.

Meanwhile the Sri Lanka Navy have constructed an amazingly beautiful and exciting golf driving range – Aqua Driving Range in Welisara and a 9-hole links golf course by the Sea, the Sandy Bay Golf Links in Trincomalee.

The Diayatalawa Army Golf Cantonment is currently under re-construction with a view to upgrading the present golfing facility.
