Underdog Sudath Kumara stunned experienced Nirmal Hettiarachchi to win the Pin Fernando Trophy 2016 at the Royal Colombo Golf Club on Friday (29).
The final of the Pin Fernando Trophy produced an unexpected result when Sudath a newcomer, turned the tables defeating Nirmal comfortably 4 and 3.
Nirmal and Sudath were the two top seeds being the top two qualifiers and predictably met in the final.
What could not be predicted was the margin of victory for Sudath Kumar receiving only 4 strokes from Nirmal.
Sudath made 5 pars in the first half to take an unassailable lead of 4 up after 9 holes.
Nirmal giving away 2 strokes in the first half did himself no favours by playing probably the worst game in the recent times.
The Pin Fernando Trophy has always being a challenging tournament having to qualify and then play match-play to win the coveted title commemorating probably the best Match-Play Golfer Sri Lanka ever produced, the legendary Pin Fernando.
