A solitary goal by Gemunu Higgoda gave Matale Sports Club a thrilling 1-0 win over Army SC in the final to emerge winners and take away a prize of Rs. 40,000/= at the Matale SC invitation inter club Hockey tournament exclusively for veterans over 40 worked off at Edward Park Hockey ground Matale on March 11.
The tournament organised and conducted by Matale SC to mark its 80th anniversary saw the participation of five veterans teams representing Army SC, Zahira SC, CH & FC, Old Bens SC and Matale SC.
Captain of Matale SC Palitha Wasalage was adjudged as the best player while C. Batugoda was named the best goal keeper of the tournament. State Minister of Agriculture and MP for Matale Wasantha Aluvihare was the Chief Guest at the presentation ceremony.
Cash prizes of Rs. 20000/= and Rs. 10000/= were awarded to the runners up (Army) and third place (CH & FC) respectively.
