Motorsports: Controversy brings ‘Nilwala SMSC Drag Race 2017’ to an abrupt halt

Sport

Introduction of a new starting light system (Tree), lack of coordination, lethargy of competitors in responding to the marshal’s call, spectators risking their safety by lining the tyre walls, canines on the track and finally a controversy between riders and officials saw the Nilwala SMSC Drag Race 2017 held at the SLAF track at Katukurunda dragging on till 7pm before ending abruptly without a champion could be found in a few events.

A total 138 drivers and 59 riders had entered for the event under 21 vehicle classes.

The officials after a delayed start the competitors were electronically timed on the 400 meter tack and those who ‘bulbed’ (left before the lights turned green) the start were given a rerun.

With the new Christmas tree lighting system being introduced there were repeated restarts until everyone had a fair run.

This initial timing process went on till past 11.00am after which the starters demonstrated how the new starting light and timing system worked to all the drivers and riders.

It was almost noon when the first drag finally got

Although the meet was scheduled to be concluded by 2.30pm it was dusk when it reached the final stages.

The riders, some who did not have lights on their machines found racing difficult and there was some controversy when a rider demanded for a rerun as a canine had crossed the track when the drag was on.

Eventually the controversy grew in to a heated argument with riders pointing out many irregularities which had taken place due to the lack of coordination between the race officials at which time personnel from the SLAF had to intervene to bring the situation under control.

Anoma Jayampathi Chairperson of the Sri Lanka Air Force Seva Vanitha Unit who arrived on time for the scheduled awards ceremony was only able to present Sithara Peiris champion of the cars 1001 up to 1300cc event before she had to leave.

President of Southern Motor Sports Club presented Jayampathi with a memento for collaborating with the Nilwala Lions Club,
