Mobitel Eagles, despite losing the final to Cargills Gladiators in the second leg by 17 to 28, ended up as the overall Champions of the Sri Lanka Super Sevens 2016, with a total aggregate of 55 points. The Sri Lanka Super Sevens second leg was concluded at Colombo Race Course grounds yesterday.
At the first break Gladiators led the proceeding 14-7.
Cargills Gladiators finished first in the second leg tournament with a total points of 30 and Mobitel Eagles was placed second with 25 points.
The Gladiators despite finishing third in the first leg, displayed superb sevens rugby skills with good support play to upset their fancied rivals. The Fijian, Eminoni Nisalsila performed brilliantly to take away the final show down with scintillating three tries. He also did one conversion. His country mate, Emosi Molevaru also chipped in with a try. Thilina Wijesinghe converted one of the tries.
For the Eagles, Prince Chamara, Shehan Deelaka and Dulaj Perera scored one try each and Perera himself made one conversion.
The final of the second leg was competed closely by both teams and the Gladiators had the upper hand in every engagement.
Gladiators found the gaps of their opponents more often and their defense was rock solid.
In the first leg concluded last week, Mobitel Eagles finished first by beating Softlogic Warriors 21 to 14 and gained valuable 30 points.
In the Schools Under-18 second leg tournament, Isipathana clinched the final with an outstanding victory over their rivals St. Joseph's 33 points to 12. Isipathana won the overall schools championship as well in the Sri Lanka Super Sevens. Meanwhile first leg champions St. Peter's had to eat humble pie when St. Joseph's took sweet revenge by beating them 15-7 in the semi finals.
