Rugby: Unbeaten Kandy remains on top after 11 games

Kandy SC heads the 2015/2016 Dialog league table with an unassailable lead, and they are on their way to retain the league title for the second year running. 

So far in the season though they were tested to the limits by CR& FC and Havelocks in the first round and by Army SC in the second round, but yet they had the ability to prevail over their opponents on all occasions. 

So far out of total 11 games played, they have won all and have total points of 62. Kandy SC has three fixtures to be played to end the season. 

At the time of this article going to press, the result of the Kandy-CR encounter at Nittawela, played yesterday might have known. 

On February 20 Navy SC will host Kandy at Welisara. It may be the toughest game for Kandy in the season to overcome. 

Last season 2014/2015, Kandy was able to beat the Sailors in the first round game played at fortress Welisara, and before that they have never beaten the sailors in the same venue. 

On February 28 their final fixture will be against the Havelocks at Nittawela -- another thriller to be unfolded.

The second placed Havelocks, the former league champions of season 2012/2013, fared extremely well this season. 

With a solitary loss only to table leaders Kandy, will play CR and FC on February 20 at the Park. 

In the first round clash Havies prevailed over them. 

But the game will be a closer one. 

On February 28, they will travel to Nittawela to challenge the Kandy onslaught. 

On Saturday (13) they played against the Police SC at Police Park.

CR&FC, much was expected from them this season. 

So far they have recorded eight wins and three losses. 

Their last three games to end the season will be against Kandy, Havelock SC on February 20 and on February 27, the final fixture against the lowly placed Air Force SC at Longden Place.

Navy SC, the former league champions of 2013/2014, did not have a successful season. 

After the exodus of players to Police SC and Kandy SC before the season commencement, had a major impact on their quest to regain the league title.

On rest of the four clubs, Police SC, Army, Air Force SC and CH & FC, much was expected from the Cops. 

After inclusion of several players from the Navy, yet they put up a mediocre performance. 

But Sri Lanka Army displayed courageous rugby throughout the season. 

They had some close encounters but did not have the finish to win them. 

The Airmen and the Maitland Crescent club need to rethink of their rugby strategies.
