Sport

The Western Province Rugby Football Union (WPRFU) will conduct its annual 7s rugby tournament for its member clubs on Saturday (20) at the Police Park in Colombo.

All leading Division 'A' Clubs in the Western Province as well as Development Clubs will participate in this tournament.

A special feature of this year’s tournament will be the introduction of an Invitational Women’s tag tournament for the first time which will be held on the sidelines of the Club 7s competition.

“This is one of the highlights of our annual event calendar where we bring all member clubs to one venue to take part in a sport that we are all passionate about. While this tournament always dishes out competitive& entertaining rugby, the game is played in excellent spirit. This is a good opportunity for clubs to try out & identify new talent for their teams in view of the upcoming rugby season. I would especially like to take this occasionto thank our main sponsor SAGT for coming forward to partner with us to make this tournament a success,” commenting on the relevance of this tournament, Deputy President of WPRFU Hafeez Marso said.

“The tournament will be segmented into two categories. One will be the ‘Elite’ segment which will include the main team of all ‘A’ division clubs, while the other segment will be the ‘Development’ segment that will include the second tier of member clubs. This is done to ensure that there will not be a disparity in the level of competition. Another feature of the tournament is that all matches will be on a knock out basis which will add to the excitement of the competition. We are also extremely pleased to be able to conduct a women’s tournament for the first time, which no doubt will help to popularize the game among girls & ladies in the province,” Chairman of the Tournament Committee of the WPRFU, Jude Pillai, elaborating on the structure and format of the tournament stated.

The tournament will be sponsored by South Asia Gateway Terminal.
