England beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 88 runs to win the first Test of the three-match series with two days to spare at Headingley, Leeds today (21).
England, put into bat first, posted 298 runs with Jonny Bairstow top scoring 140 off 183 deliveries inclusive of 13 fours and a six.
Sri Lanka were left to rue by England speedsters James Anderson (5/16) and Stuart Broad (4/21) as they succumbed to 91 in reply.
Forced to follow on, they were bowled out for 119 despite Kusal Mendis top scoring 53 off 68 deliveries inclusive of eight fours.
Anderson picked five wickets in Sri Lanka's second innings to finish off with a match bag of 10 for 45.
Bairstow was named the player of the match.
The second Test will be played from May 27 to 31 at Chester-le-Street.
