Spurred by the century that he scored the first Test, 31 year-old Upul Tharanga has been given the mantle to lead the Lankan team against Zimbabwe for the forthcoming ODI Tri-series which also involves the West Indies from November 14.
Though it was indicated that vice Captain Dinesh Chandimal would join the squad for the ODIs he was held back on medical advice according to SLC secretary, Mohan de Silva.
Tharanga a veteran of 188 ODIs has scored a total of 5526 runs at an average of 32.89 with a highest of 174 against India in 2013 at the Sabina Park, Kingston, Jamaica in a tri-series what also involved the West Indies.
Another southpaw Kusal Janith Perera will act as Tharanga’s deputy during the series.
