Snooker: YMCA’s Zulficar clinch Lanka Plate title in a thriller

Sport

YMCA’s S.M. Zulficar emerged the All Island Lanka Plate Snooker champion when he defeated M.R.T. Chandana of AAC in a thriller by four frames to three in the seven frames final played at the Automobile Association billiards table.   This was Zulficar’s second successive snooker title having won the Colombo District Snooker Championship two months ago which was also a qualifying tournament for national snooker championship which is scheduled to be played later this month.   Zulficar who was sitting pretty and looked set to record a runaway win was given a fright and made to fight hard by his opponent Chandana.   Zulficar who conceded the first frame won three frames in a row and had a clear cut 3-1 lead at the end of the fourth frame.   But Chandana was not going to be an easy nut to crack as he fought his way through to take the fifth and sixth frames to make it three each and take the game to the last and deciding frame.   The two cueists came into the deciding frame under tremendous pressure but Zulficar even though he lost the fifth and sixth frames played with much more patience and went into the lead which he maintained to gain an easy win to clinch the title.   In the third place play off saw M.M. Rikaz (MICH) getting the better of Infiyas Farook (MICH) by two frames to nil in the three frames encounter.   Results:   Final: S.M. Zulficar (YMCA) beat M.R.T.
