Matthew Abeysinghe, managed to finished third in his Men’s 100m Freestyle second Heats at Rio Olympics on Tuesday (9) but failed to reach the list of final 16 who will compete in the semi-finals.
His overall placing among 59 swimmers of the event was confirmed as 50th according to Matthew's timing of 50.96seconds but the timing was quite sufficient to establish a new Sri Lanka record.
Matthew's timing on Tuesday, bettered his own timing of 51.23seconds recorded at the South Asian Games earlier in February.
Matthew, 20, has six Sri Lanka swimming records under his name in 50m Freestyle, 100m Freestyle, 200m Freestyle, 100m Butterfly Stroke, 200m Medley and 400m Medley events.
After Tuesday, Matthew becomes the fifth Sri Lankan to lose hopes of a way forward at the ongoing Rio Olympics after swimmer Kimiko Raheem, weightlifter Sudesh Peiris, rifle shooter Mangala Samarakoon and judoka Chamara Dharmawardene failed to reach the second round in their respective events.
