Young paddlers made Sri Lanka proud by winning nine gold medals at the South Asian Junior Table Tennis Championship held in Karachi, Pakistan from July 15 to 17.
Sri Lankans qualified for ten finals and won nine of them in Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Cadet Boys and Cadet Girls team events and in the individual events, the Junior Boys Singles and Doubles, Junior Girls Singles and Doubles and Cadet Girls Singles.
In the Team events the Junior Boys, Junior Girls, Cadet Boys and Cadet Girls won against Maldive, Nepal and Pakistan in straight sets 3-0 to claim gold medals.
In the Individual events Udaya Ranasinghe and Hansani Piyumila won doubles while Imasha de Silva won her event, the Cadet Girls' Singles, beating fellow compatriot Thanushi Rodrigo by 3-2.
Ranasinghe won the Junior Boy's Singles beating team-mate Krishan Wickramaratne 4-1 and went on to win the Junior Boy's Doubles teaming up with Wickramaratne to defeat Syed Obid Shah and Fahd Khawaja of Pakistan 3-0.
Piyumila won the Junior Girls' Singles event beating team-mate Chamathsara Fernando 4-1.
Piyumila and Fernando teamed up to beat Maldivian pair Aisath Rafa and Laisa Fathuhulla 3-0 to win the Junior Girls' Doubles event.
Harshana Karandawala was the only paddler to lose his event, losing the Cadet Boy's Singles to Pakistani Faizan Zahoor 0-3.

A Sri Lanka Air Force Bell 212 helicopter belonging to the No. 72 squadron has crashed into the Madhuru Oya reservoir this morning, Air FOrce Media Spokesman Eranda Geeganage said.
Update: Five of the twelve passengers on board the bell 212 aircraft that crashed into the Maduru Oya today, have succumbed to their injuries, the SLAF said.
