U-17 Cricket: Five unbeaten teams among teams that reached second round

The first round of the Under-17 Division I Cricket Tournament concluded last week. 

This saw five teams S. Thomas’, Sri Sumangala Panadura, St Joseph Vaz Wennappuwa, Maliyadeva Kurunegala and Dharmaraja winning all their matches. 

Thus, they have qualified to the second round. 

Three teams S. Thomas’, Dharmaraja and Sri Sumangala won all seven matches in their group that had eight teams in each while St. Joseph Vaz and Maliyadeva won six matches. 

Prince of Wales and Wesley also won six out of the seven matches that they played followed by St. Benedict’s and St. Servatius Matara five, Mahinda four wins were the other teams to have had a successful run while defending champions St. Sebastian’s and last year’s runner up Thurstan ended up in the third and second slots. 

The five unbeaten teams will no doubt be in contention for the title with the Thomians having a slight edged over the other four teams. 

The teams in the second round will play three matches to decide the champion and the runners-up of the eight groups.

Group ‘T’: S. Thomas’ - Mount Lavinia, St. Joseph’s - Darley Road, St. Sebastian’s - Moratuwa, St. Peter’s - Negombo. 

Group ‘Q’: Prince of Wales, Isipathana, St. Xavier’s - Marawila, Ananda. 

Group ‘R’: Sri Sumangala - Panadura, Maris Stella, St. Anne’s - Kurunegala, Nalanda. 

Group ‘S’: Wesley, Mahanama, St. Sylvester’s, Mahanama - Panadura. 

Group ‘T’: St. Benedict’s, Richmond, Kalutara MV, Thurstan. 

Group ‘U’: St. Joseph Vaz - Wennappuwa, Debarawewa National School, Dharmasoka, Royal. 

Group ‘V’: Maliyadeva, St. Anthony’s - Katugastota, Tissa Central - Kalutara, St. Servatius’ - Matara. 

Group ‘W’: Dharmaraja, Trinity, St. Peter’s and Mahinda.
