Katana Combined and Koswadiya Vijaya Sports Club claimed the Men's Open and Women’s Open titles respectively at the President’s Gold Cup Volleyball Championship finals which concluded at the Sugathadasa Stadium on Tuesday (19).
Katana Combined had to sweat more than they anticipated to overcome Nattandiya SC by 3-2 in the Men's Open final with the final scores reading as 25/21, 23/25, 24/26, 25/21 and 15/12.
This was the second consecutive year that Katana Combined emerged champions.
The third place playoff was won by Balares Sports Club of Boralesgamuwa.
In the Women's Open final Vijaya, Koswadiya experienced a similar challenge from Kapila Sports Club, who took the decider to a five-setter battle.
Eventually Vijaya, Koswadiya won the final by 3-2 with scores of 25/11, 27/25, 19/25, 23/25 and 15/9 as they claimed the title for the third consecutive year.
Golden Birds Sports Club of Radawana claimed the third place.
In the Under-22 tournament, Nattandiya United Sports Club beat Hungama Vijayaba Sports Club by 3-0 with scores of 25/18, 25/19 and 25/22 in the Men’s segment.
Boyagama Siri Perakum Sports Club beat Kurunegala Casual Line Sports Club by 3-2 in a contrasting and rather tough Women’s final of the same age group.
The final scores were 25/20, 25/20, 22/25, 22/25 and 15/7.
