A total of 16 teams will compete at the National Volleyball Championships organised by the Sri Lanka Volleyball Federation (SLVF) and sponsored by 'Munchee', which will be worked off from October 1 to November 29 at the National Youth Services Council (NYSC) in Maharagama.
The eight teams participating in the Men’s tournament are Sri Lanka Air Force (SLAF), Sri Lanka Army (SLA), Sri Lanka Navy (SLN), NYSC, CEB, SLPA, Police and Mercantile Combined.
The eight teams competing in the Women’s tournament are SLAF, SLA, SLN, NYSC, SLPA, Police, Casualine and Brandix.
Over 2,000 teams are expected to compete in the Novices Tournament.
The Super League Champions will receive Rs 100,000 while the runner-up will receive Rs 75,000.
Winners of the Novices Tournament will receive Rs 50,000 and the Runners-up Rs 30,000.
The teams have been selected on the basis of their performances last year.
"This is the 9th occasion that 'Munchee', the flagship brand of Ceylon Biscuits Ltd (CBL) has sponsored this national event. The finals of the championship is scheduled for November 29 at the NYSC Indoor Stadium, Maharagama," said SLVF President, W.G.S. Erandika at a press briefing held at the Cinnamon Lake.
Commenting on the sponsorship, Erandika said that, "Under Munchee’s sponsorship, the status of Volleyball has been elevated to a greater height with an awakening of the game, especially, in rural areas. This is evident by the participation of an ever increasing number of teams every year".
