Major parties say poll peaceful

By Nadia Fazlulhaq

The three main parties said yesterday the elections in the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces were generally peaceful and only a few incidents were reported in contrast to the large-scale violence in the polls campaign.

SLFP General Secretary Maitripala Sirisena said there were a few incidents perpetrated by UNPers but the voter turnout was good and his party was confident of victory.

UNP General Secretary Tissa Attanayake said the voting day yesterday was peaceful in contrast to the violent polls campaign. He also said there were a few incidents and blamed government ministers and their supporters for them.

JVP General Secretary Tilvin Silva said that as a result of continuous requests made to the Elections Commissioner, a peaceful election day was seen. He said the deployment of the armed services in the two provinces had apparently helped bring the polls violence under control.

CWC Vice President R. Yogarajan also said the elections were peaceful except for a few incidents such as the snatching of identity cards in some areas including Nivithigala and Kahawatte.

He said a large number of estate workers were unable to vote because they did not have identity cards or any other identity documents.
