25 arrested on polls day

At least 25 people were arrested in the North Central and Sabaragamuwa provinces for committing election-related offences yesterday, Police Elections Chief Gamini Nawaratne said.

He said 16 of those arrests were made in the Sabaragamuwa province for allegedly trying to disrupt voting at polling stations.

An army deserter, three former security forces personnel and three civilians were arrested by Superintendent Vaas Gunawardene in Anuradhapura yesterday.

Police said a knuckleduster and posters slandering UPFA Chief Ministerial candidate Berty Premalal Dissanayake were found in the van in which they were travelling.

UPFA wins Ratnapura postal vote

The results of the Ratnapura District’s postal votes at yesterday’s provincial polls were the first to be released last night.

The results: UPFA - 4213, UNP - 1810 and JVP - 290
