Workshop on Materials based Industries and Instrumentation
The Materials Technology Section of ITI, the national research arm of Sri Lanka, is organizing a Training Workshop on Materials based Industries and Instrumentation on January 29 and 30 at the ITI auditorium. The workshop has been arranged specially for A/L qualified science personnel, undergraduates, graduates and management trainees in the field of Materials Technology. The workshop will be conducted in English and Sinhala.


Dialog back as no. 2 stock in Colombo market
Dialog on Thursday regained its number two slot on total market capitalisation from John Keells Holdings (JKH) PLC, which recently showed a dramatic share price upturn with reports that main shareholder, the Captain family will not sell anymore from their 18% stake.
This came a day after the conglomerate beat the telecom industry leader with 7.36% market capitalisation when Dialog had 7.2% - as at Wednesday. Dialog’s share of the CSE capitalisation now stands at 7.42 % while JKH is at 7.31 %.
Dialog became the second highest market capitalised company when it launched its initial public offering in 2006 and clinched this position from JKH at the time. SLT is number one with 11.12%.


Emerald appointed sole licensee for Venfield Shirts
Emerald has been appointed sole licensee for the world renowned brand ‘Venfield’ in Sri Lanka, showing its versatality in the local garments industry.

The Venfield shirt, from ABC Apparels, one of the largest apparel companies in India, is a fast growing men’s- wear brand in the very competitive Indian market.

Emerald International is one of the very few Sri Lankan garment manufacturers who manufacture local brands as well as international brands for world renowned well established labels, the company said.


BOI promotes ‘Knowledge City’ in Gampaha
Acknowledging the fast growing demand for private sector lead tertiary education, the Board of Investment of Sri Lanka is promoting the establishment of a “Knowledge City” at Henegama in the Gampaha District. The location selected is a 122 acre land belonging to the BOI about 33 km from Colombo.

“Statistics reveal that there is a huge scope for commercially run educational institutes which can award foreign degrees with the affiliation of recognized foreign universities. It is also expected that this Knowledge City will also attract foreign students especially from the South Asian and Pacific Regions,” the BOI said.

It said the self contained city will have common library facilities, sports grounds, gym, health care facilities, food courts, hostels, supermarkers and residential units. The Public-Private Partnership (PPP) Unit of the BOI is promoting this project to be developed on a PPP basis, where the development of the infrastructure will be carried out by a selected developer on a Design, Build, Finance and Operate basis, it said.


Second Travel and Tourism Awards on January 26
The second Travel and Tourism Awards will be held on January 16 at the BMICH, organised by the Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with Sri Lanka Tourism, the Ministry said.

It said the Travel and Tourism Awards will recognize and reward, excellence among industry stakeholders and encourage their contribution in future, for the sustainable development of the tourism industry.

The award categories has 11 specific areas identified by specialists in the field.
It will focus on general awards for tourism legends who have contributed tremendously to the industry as a whole through many years of dedicated service.

It will also award tourism pioneers who have broken new ground and achieved much in the tourism industry through ground-breaking achievements, the Ministry said in a press release.


World Bank calls for civil society offers to fund projects
The World Bank Colombo Office last week invited civil society organizations in Sri Lanka to submit applications for the Civil Society Fund (CSF) 2009, formerly known as the Small Grants Programme.
The theme for the Civil Society Fund 2009 (CSF 2009) will be Advocacy for Accountability in Local Service Delivery and applications are being sought for projects that will strengthen delivery of Local Government Services, the Bank said in a press release.

Five grants of up to US$9000 each will be awarded this year. Applicants must indicate a willingness to match an equivalent amount for completing activity within one year. This could be in-kind contribution or leveraged through partnerships with other Civil Society Organizations. Organizations that have not been supported by the Program in previous years are encouraged to apply.

Organizations are not eligible for more than three grants from the Civil Society Fund within a five-year period, the press release added.


Mobitel’s Upahara scheme for Environment Ministry
The Sri Lanka State Trading (General) Co Ltd in partnership with Sri Lanka Telecom Mobitel has formally handed over the Upahara package along with the first SIM card to the Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources as part of a national endeavour to ensure some economic benefit to the state sector and pensioners.

SLT Mobitel said in a press release that the widely popular and revolutionary Upahara communication package was formally presented to Patali Champika Ranawaka, Minister of Environment and Natural Resources by Bandula Gunawardena, Minister of Trade, Marketing Development, Cooperatives and Consumer Affairs.

Mr Gunawardena said the Upahara package is a tribute from Mobitel to the state sector employees and pensioners. Under the guidance of the Mahinda Chinthana programme, this package is tailor made for the state sector that has over one million employees and over 400,000 pensioners.
