Private sales of specified types of tea have been “restricted” until June this year, to help sustain Colombo Tea Auction prices.
“It was decided to restrict private sales of leafy and tippy types, from high, mid and low grown tea categories, because of impacts on auction prices,” said the Chairman of the Sri Lanka Tea Board, Lalith Hettiarachchi.
The restriction, imposed from January, is expected to support prices at the Tea Auctions by preventing price disruptive purchases from outside the auction. After tea prices crashed towards the end of last year, the Colombo Tea auction reopened in January to “more encouraging” prices.
This week’s tea auctions sustained its improved prices with low-grown prices averaging at close to Rs 300 per kilo, mid-growns bringing between Rs 250 – Rs 255 per kilo on average, and high-growns fetching between Rs 225 to Rs 260 per kilo. |
