Sickening Lankan television services

Jayaratne of Piliyandala writes...........

Sri Lankan television channels are moving like a reputed race horse towards a world record in Advertisments. From the wake of birds to the time the bats and owls go to sleep, the T.V. Channels from national to private are filled with ADS of non-selling goods and chemical dipped items practically every minute or less.

Sri Lankan viewers welcome items on agriculture, small industries, truthful news and quality announcement daily. What do these channels offer the viewers? Part of teledramas are telecast daily. A sub part moves for about two minutes or less and is followed by nearly five minutes or more of ADS of no value. Money seems to be the root of all evil and the channels seems to be under the chitches of a handful of business magnates. Limitless ADS are accepted and certain programmes are shifted to after 10.00 p.m. to entertain ADS. Whether it be an important religious ceremony or valuable discussion on education, culture and health, the AD is dipped between.

All viewers await eagerly for news. There is no convenience afforded even for this programme. Commencement of news begins with ADS apart from ADS between like a morning prayer. Now even news has been converted to a ‘teledrama’. One part at the news run on scheduled time and the balance of the news on the same subject at 09.00 pm or 10 .00pm.

The viewer owns the valuable T.V. set and pays heavy electricity bills apart from breaking rest watching taledramas of a non-ending story. Authorities accepting ADS should limit the number and not entertain with cash gifts from companies.

There are two ADICs in Sri Lanka, namely alcohol and tobacco. TV has introduced the third ADIC namely the SMS madness. Even teenage school children and youngsters below 15 years of age cannot be without a mobile phone. This seems the best marriage broker and is responsible for disasters, incidents. I understand that the young users hands are dippel into the handbag of the mother and the purse of the father. Parents please withdraw the Celtel from your children.

Finally, I suggest that the TV viewers should boycott such medial and switch onto the print media to gather good knowledge on various subjects such as education, agriculture and discussion on health. Small industries and fruitful ADS. By adhering to this new mode, you viewers will benefit in several ways:

1. Save your T.V. repairs.
2. Avoiding ADS of nuisance.
3. Save your electricity bill.
4. You will be fit without under rest.
5. Sell your old paper and save ½ the value of paper.

If the TV viewers adhere to the above suggestions, your will have a healthy mind in a healthy body.
