Showcasing the best of UK literature in Colombo

British Book Fair 2009

The British Book Fair, organized by the British Council will be held from Thursday, June 18 to Saturday, June 20 at the British Council premises from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on all three days. Entrance is free.

The British Book Fair provides a variety of British publications at discounted rates with stalls by Colombo’s leading booksellers. Customers purchasing books over Rs.1500 are eligible for a discounted membership with the British Council Library.

But that’s not all. Celebrating British Council Sri Lanka’s 60th Anniversary, this year’s British Book Fair will have a series of special events to provide fun and entertainment to both adults and children during their visit to the Book Fair.

“Festival of colours”

An art competition for children between the ages of 5 -15 with the presence of children’s artist Sybil Wettasinghe will be held on June 18 & 19 from 2 – 5.30 p.m. Selected work will be exhibited on June 20 at the British Council. Tickets should be purchased to register for the art competition.

Cooking with Koluu

One of Colombo’s best known chefs will demonstrate his unique, entertaining style of cooking on the British Council lawn.

The demonstration for adults will be held on Friday, June 19 from 5.30 p.m. – 7 p.m, while the demonstration for kids will be held on Saturday, May 20 from 10.30 a.m. – 12.00 noon.

Limited seating is available, so those interested are advised to get tickets soon.

Grammar Quest 2009

This interactive quiz between 24 leading schools in Colombo, aims to improve participants, knowledge of English Grammar while developing team work and leadership qualities.

Preliminary sessions will take place from June 16 – 19 from 3.00 – 5 p.m., with the finals on June 20 from 1.30 – 3.30 p.m. Admission for all sessions is free.
