Up and coming, amateur bands in the country – be they rock, hip hop, jazz or reggae, there’s new hope for you – World Music Entertainment (WME) has decided to take you in hand.
We last heard of WME as the organisers of the reality concert, Revolution – Battle of the bands (Rock), which saw band ‘1234’ walking away as the winners.
WME has a lot more such events planned and according to Malinda Perera its chairman, their goal is to eventually hold these events (always based on a reality concept) on a weekly basis, with gigs being arranged in various parts of the country, every weekend. Right now though, the company is still growing and the next big event is tentatively scheduled for September.
Meanwhile WME is on another mission, to create a database of bands, mainly amateur bands who want a helping hand. There are two objectives for this – firstly to allow people to book a band for functions/events. This will also give new bands a chance as well as more exposure.
Secondly, to create a roster of bands for WME to work with, for its reality concept based events. They have only rock bands with them now but are keen to have other varieties as well, especially hip hop.
English bands are highly encouraged to join but other language bands are welcome to join if they want to. According to Malinda, the main aim is to work with amateur bands and bring them up to star status. “We have the expertise that new bands may need with regard to training on issues such as showmanship, interaction with audience, selection of songs etc” says Malinda. “We’ll provide all this as well as other services such as legal/managerial/marketing free of charge.”
In return, the bands will have to perform free of charge at the events that WME organises until such time as they make a name for themselves and become in demand as well as have to pay a commission on any gigs that WME has booked for them.
“This is a call for all musicians out there, young or old who want a chance”, says Malinda.

All a band has to do in order to join is to send WME a demo or invite them for a practice session / function. |
