Health Ministry silent on strike

Doctors say they will go ahead with their islandwide protest, scheduled for Tuesday

Up to last night, neither the Minister of Health nor the Secretary to the Ministry had responded to a threat of strike action by the Government Medical Officers’ Association (GMOA).

The GMOA says it plans to hold an islandwide strike on Tuesday to protest at the way doctors are transferred and doctors and interns are given placements in government hospitals.

GMOA secretary Dr. Bimantha Gunasekara confirmed that the strike would go ahead as scheduled.
All government doctors, barring those serving in the Maharagama Cancer Hospital, the Lady Ridgeway Children’s Hospital and the Castle Street Maternity Hospital, will take part in the strike.

An effort to resolve the issues during talks last week between doctors and Health Ministry Secretary Dr. Atula Kahandaliyanage came to nothing.
