Police release astrologer

An astrologer who was detained by the CID for allegedly making political predictions unfavourable to the present government has been released from police custody. He was told, however, that he may have to appear in court, if required, according to DIG CID Nandana Munasinghe.

Chandrasiri Bandara, who writes a regular astrology column for the independent Sinhala-language newspaper “Irudina”, was held in police custody for two weeks following reports that he had said that Prime Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayaka would become President and Opposition leader Ranil Wickremesinghe would become Prime Minister, in September.

He was released by Colombo Fort Magistrare and Additional District Judge Gihan Pilapitiya after the CID informed there was no evidence to proceed with the case.

It was later revealed, however, that the astrologer had not made the alleged predictions.
