SELCO Solar to light up war-torn areas
SELCO Solar Lanka Limited (SSLL) one of the foremost solar companies in Sri Lanka and very successful in both rural and urban markets, says it is looking forward to light up the war-torn northern and eastern parts of the country.

A company statement said the MD/CEO of SSLL, Susantha Pinto, had carried out an inspection tour in these areas along with representatives of other solar developers and visited Vavuniya, Jaffna, Kayts, Pungudutiwu, Chavakachcheri and the surrounding areas.

"Since these areas are not connected to the main grid at present, the people have no other option but to seek the assistance of kerosene oil, the cause for environmental, hygienic and fire hazards," it said.

Pinto says he had discussions with representatives of the Chamber of Commerce and some NGOs of the area and though the people are well aware of solar power, they have not been able to get the full benefit of it because of the war. The present situation has allowed them to reap the benefits of this immensely popular and most feasible option in renewable energies. He said the scope for marketing solar products in these areas is very good and even if the CEB starts to repair the damaged power lines and re-instate the power supply, there would still be vast areas to be cleared, leaving room for solar. SSLL, the statement said, will be further strengthened to do this by attracting more investments from its the US-based parent company, Solar Electric Light Company which has similar subsidiaries in India, Vietnam, China Brazil and Africa. The commitment of the parent company was revealed when Anthony Dixon a Director, visited Sri Lanka in April. Dixon said, at that time, the US government is very optimistic about the peace initiative of Sri Lanka and there is in good potential towards attracting more funds towards this task. SSLL, with its head office in Nugegoda, operates nine branches spread throughout the country. It installs over 300 solar lighting systems per month both in rural and urban households. SSLL provides a guaranteed after sales service for two years, which has made it the number one solar service company in the country.
