Thinking and feeling Sri Lankan

By Anne Abayasekara, Colombo 6

“Why should the police be bothered with ethnicity?” Why indeed?! The very pertinent letter from A. J. Vincent under the above heading (The Sunday Times, June 14) caught my eye.

Two weeks ago, when a young couple I know went to obtain the “pink form” for their marriage registration, they were surprised to find that the declaration of “race” was a requirement in the form they had to fill.

Is it only in our passports that we are a nation of Sri Lankans? If nation building is to be attempted in earnest, we have to begin to think and feel “Sri Lankan”, starting with our leaders (political and religious), and our bureaucrats and permeating the minds of all of us citizens.
