Exciting musical extravaganza with Sujeeva

Sujeeva Hapugalle will bring alive her wide exposure to diverse cultural experiences, study and performance in presenting an exciting and stylistically varied programme of romantic, impressionistic works, operatic and song transcriptions by Chopin, Liszt, Schumann, Debussy and Ravel.

There will also be music from around the world - Far Eastern composers, the melodic charm of Spain with works by De Falla and Albeniz and fiery evocative Latin moods including Argentinian and Brazilian tangos by Piazzolla, Ginastera, Nazerath Lecuona ending with a request for Gershwin!

‘Poetry of the Piano’- Sujeeva’s concert is presented by the Zonta Club 11 of Colombo on Friday, July 3 at the Lionel Wendt.

On the coveted international roster of Steinway Concert Artists since 2001, Sujeeva has been recognized for her artistry and engaging performances around the world.

Sujeeva has been a keen supporter and performing artist for several charities in the UK , USA and Sri Lanka . She was a selected artist for Sir Yehudi Menuhin's Live Music Now, Series in the UK . After a few years absence due to her recent move to the US, Sujeeva is excited to return to the stage in Colombo .

At home, she first studied with her mother Indranee Hapugalle who celebrates 50 years of dedicated teaching this year and the revered Mary Bilimoria.

Sujeeva was an ABRSM scholar at the Royal College of Music, London and lived in the UK for many years, performing at prestigious concert platforms and festivals in London. She has also won numerous awards at national and international competitions and been featured on Classic FM and BBC television.
She now lives in California where she has an active international career as performer, educator, adjudicator of competitions. She serves on the board of the San Francisco Chamber Orchestra where she initiated the popular Rush Hour Concert Series in San Francisco's Financial District and an affiliation to present Chamber Music for younger audiences in the Bay area reaching thousands of students.

Sujeeva is also a popular concert pianist for the 6 star cruise line, Crystal and also presented three highly rated concerts on the RMS Queen Mary 2 during the cruise liner's much publicized maiden world cruise in 2007.

The Burns Unit is a one of the principal projects of Zonta International’s Club 11 of Colombo, to which proceeds from Sujeewa’s concert will be channelled. Zonta Club 11 President Chathuri Ranasinghe said: “The Burns Unit is the only one of its kind for the whole island. Victims of burns are often hideously hurt and horrendously traumatized by their injuries.

Consultant plastic surgeon Dr. Chandini Perera in charge of this Unit says a bathing trolley and a sanitized chamber for specialized care of these burns victims, most of whom are women are urgently needed.
