Freelance journalist, R. Manamendra, a depositor of the failed Golden Key (GK) Credit Card Co , committed suicide at his home in Colombo on Monday.
This is the first known suicide among many desperate depositors struggling to recover their money. His relatives said that his body lying on the bed was discovered on Wednesday by a neighbour. They also found some pressure tablets while the post mortem inquiry revealed that Mr. Manmendra had committed suicide. He was living alone at his apartment in Wellawatte.
Officials of the GK Depositors Association said the victim, aged 48, had deposited around Rs 10 million and had been depressed over the failure to get his money. They said that he had another deposit of Rs. 4 million at the failed F & G company. He made all these deposits by selling his property, his relatives said.
Mr. Manamendra specialised in sports and he was popular as a ‘Royal-Thomian’ cricket encyclopedia among his colleagues. Some months ago, another depositor of F&G tried to commit suicide by setting himself on fire inside the F&G headoffice before being stopped by others. |
