The American International School, Dehiwela, successfully conducted their Annual Swimming Championships at the SSC pool recently.
More than 110 children from the various age groups, ranging from 5 years to 17, competed for Honours. The event was graced by Mr Indra de Silva, retired IGP as the Chief Guest. Mr Indra De Silva is the Chairman of the National Sports Selection Committee & a Member of the National Sports Council as well. A high standard of swimming was witnessed. The enthusiasm with which the students threw themselves into the competition was noteworthy and augurs well for the future of Swimming in Sri Lanka.
The credit for the enthusiasm must go to the CEO of AIS, Mrs Sherryn Yaseen Mangalagama and Mr Suresh Yaseen Director Operations AIS, who spared no pains to raise the level of the sport amongst the children. They were ably assisted in the organization and running of the event by the Sports Manager and the Principal of AIS.
Gayashi Tharanga competing in the under 15 events made a significant impact with wins in the breast stroke, free style and the relay. In the under 13 events victories were recorded with good performances by Thaveen Gunaratne, Shervin Ranatunga and Charith Karunaratne.
Mrs. Indra De Silva, wife of the Chief Guest gave away the awards at the presentation ceremony which followed. |
