While there are many English fonts compliant with Unicode, the universal standard which provides unique numbers for each character of every language, there are 'not many' such Sinhala fonts currently available, a fact that restricts 'local language support' for ICT in Sinhala, according to a statement by Sri Lanka's Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA). As such, a new Sinhala font called "Bhashita" has been made freely available by the agency to enable ICT in the Sinhala language, reportedly "a priority area in the e-Sri Lanka initiative."
Allowing users to "create Sinhala language content correctly with the full use of Unicode features, and for the interchange of correct Sinhala characters in the communication media", ICTA's "Bhashita" Sinhala font also comes with a licence indicating that it "cannot be changed". |
