The World Bank said this week it has no intention of withdrawing its support to the proposed Tourism project. It was referring to our story headlined ‘World Bank project in the balance’ which appeared on September 20, 2009. The Bank, in a letter to the newspaper said:
“The World Bank believes that the New Tourism Act provides a good framework for development of the sector and a recent article in the Sunday Times referring to the possibility of World bank withdrawing its support to the proposed Tourism Project is erroneous.
The World Bank team has been working very closely with the Ministry of Finance, Ministry of tourism and other related Tourism agencies, private sector, a wider stake holder group and potential beneficiaries since September 2008 on the design of the project. Sri Lanka with the end of the armed conflict has great potential to develop the tourism sector as one of the major contributions to the economy, and the World Bank stays committed to supporting the Tourism sector.”
Business Editor: We stand by our story. The story also said the signing of the agreement on this project scheduled for this month has been postponed, which has not been denied in this letter. |
